Turkey is the world's second-largest scrap metal importer, feeding an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel industry that transforms recycled metal into finished long and flat products for domestic construction and global export. African scrap, increasingly abundant as Africa's industrial base expands, is in growing demand from Turkish steel mills seeking supply diversification from their traditional European and American sources.
HMS 1 & HMS 2: The Core of Steel Scrap Trade
Heavy Melting Steel (HMS) is the most traded category of ferrous scrap globally. HMS 1 consists of heavy steel scrap with individual pieces up to 900 mm × 450 mm, free of galvanized, tinned, or alloyed material. HMS 2 includes lighter and mixed ferrous scrap within the same dimensional constraints but permits a broader material mix.
Turkish steel mills purchase HMS 1/2 in an 80/20 or 70/30 blend ratio depending on their EAF process requirements. We source HMS material from demolition contractors, industrial scrappers, and vehicle dismantlers across Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Kenya, all verified against ISRI specification 200–206.
Container loading is conducted at origin ports under weight supervision, with Bill of Lading weights and independent weight certificates issued at load port. We typically ship in 20FCL lots (approximately 22–24 MT per container) and can coordinate multi-container monthly programs.
"Africa generates tens of millions of tonnes of scrap annually: infrastructure projects, vehicle fleets, industrial equipment. Most of it moves through informal channels. We formalize that supply chain and connect African scrap to Turkish steel mills at transparent, competitive terms."
- MEEI Hub Metals Sourcing DeskNon-Ferrous Metals: Copper, Aluminium & Stainless
Non-ferrous scrap commands significantly higher value per tonne than ferrous material, and Africa's growing industrial base generates increasing quantities of copper wire, aluminium extrusion, cast aluminium, and stainless steel scrap through manufacturing, construction, and utility infrastructure projects.
We source bare bright copper (99.9% purity minimum), copper wire scrap (Birch/Cliff grade), aluminium extrusion scrap (6xxx series), cast aluminium (A380, ADC12), and 304/316 stainless steel scrap, all sorted, sized, and free of insulation and non-metallic contamination before container loading.
Composition analysis reports (XRF gun analysis at yard) and photograph documentation of each container load are provided with every shipment to Turkish buyers, ensuring transparent material quality before arrival.
Direct container shipments from Lagos Apapa, Tema, Mombasa, and Durban to Turkish steel mill receiving terminals.
Supplier Verification & Compliance
The scrap metal trade carries reputational and compliance risk if counterparty due diligence is not conducted properly. We operate a strict supplier verification process: every African scrap dealer or recycler in our network undergoes identity verification, business registration confirmation, and a physical yard inspection before any commercial engagement.
We do not work with suppliers who cannot provide verifiable documentation of material origin. All shipments comply with Basel Convention requirements for scrap metal trade, and we ensure that export permits from African source countries and Turkish import customs requirements are met before container release.
Payment terms for African scrap suppliers are structured on a per-transaction basis, typically with sight LC from the Turkish buyer or advance payment from MEEI Hub where a commercial relationship has been established. We act as a trusted intermediary on both sides.
What We Source
